I'm marking this as a dup of a similar bug in platform runtime, but Susan is
correct that this is more about establishing a common convention for projects
to use. I personally don't think this is worth the effort in handling migration
and compatibility for changing all these existing file and folder names, but if
someone wants to take this up they are welcome to it ;) We do try to avoid the
dot prefix for new metadata files - for example all the p2 metadata no longer
uses the dot prefix to hide them.
