Although this is likely not the answer you're looking for, I'm glad to 
report to you that your deletes are working just fine.

du download.eclipse.org/ -sh
274G    download.eclipse.org/

If you're also mirroring archive.eclipse.org, then brace yourself:

du archive.eclipse.org/ -sh
155G    archive.eclipse.org/
