Boris, what -are- yours thoughts on
this? I'm fine with any relatively straightforward implementation but still
think we need to ensure that the pubilc-facing API is as simple as it can
be...

I agree that we should look at Tom's code more closely
(and help improve
it) before we try to reach a consensus.  Also, I am not convinced
that this
consensus has to be in the "middle"...
