Re: [e4-dev] Now's the time to figure out what we need in e4

Hi Eric,

I think the common complaints I here from new Eclipse 4 customers are:

1.) Missing Eclipse 4 perspective switcher (menu and toolbar)
2.) Eclipse 4 progress view missing
3.) Help system missing

I personally think the lack of Pojo programming support for the Eclipse IDE is preventing a larger ecosystem to provide Eclipse 4 extensions. So your work started for POJO views in https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=356511 was really great. Having the same of handlers would help. Maybe it could be used to build a perspective switcher which works in the IDE and the RCP applications.

Also I think the model fragments should become more flexible, I think the related bug is https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=324954.

Best regards, Lars

+1 on the help system. We have building a new one on our roadmap as well. Be happy to work with others up stream on it.

How about the help system? The biggest problem we had with going to production with e4 (we've just passed code freeze!) has been that we had to "roll our own" help system. I know you want to do something radical with help to make it play like the rest of e4. So it's a lot of work. But starting it sooner rather than later will enable more people to get this into production apps.

The second biggest problem were bugs that had to do with cloning perspectives. But that could just be a lack of documentation/examples. I had all sorts of weirdness where certain handlers and stuff were missing from the context of the cloned perspective. But that may be specific to our approach rather than an e4 thing in general.

Cheers,

Jo
