RE: [dsdp-pmc] Introducing the RTSC proposed project

Martin

RTSC components are called packages and are similar to Java packages in terms of their scope (and physical structure).  The XDCTOOLS product itself has been created as a collection of over one hundred RTSC packages; we use the XDCTOOLS (and RTSC packages) to produce, build, and document the XDCTOOLS.  Not all the packages are as "exemplary" as others, however.

You raise a good question.  We do have training materials and probably another 50 packages that are our "example" packages.  Perhaps there is a sort of tutorial that can be delivered along with the tools themselves.

As for CDT, this is an area that where we want to ensure seamless integration with the RTSC package model.  As it stands we have only very basic integration; CDT can trigger the clean and build of RTSC packages.  I'd like to see syntax highlighting for the IDL, integration with the help system, integration with build error handling, etc.  I'm hopeful that by being part of Eclipse we can drive much deeper integration than we could otherwise.

As Doug mentioned, I'm on vacation this week and I may be slow in answering questions and brief.  I hope this helps.

Hi all,

this sounds very exciting!

I guess the one big question I have is, what exemplary components

would be shipped from Eclipse? The proposal talks a lot about

tools, a core model, and some "meta-components", but I think

that in order to be truly successful, at least a few actually usable

components would need to be included.

What components could that be?

The other question is, if and how the build / debug / deployment

system of RTSC would be integrated with the CDT.

Cheers,

Hi PMC,

Permit me to introduce you to the Dave Russo, from Texas Instruments.  TI is proposing a new project under DSDP called “Real-Time Software Components” (RTSC)…affectionately known as “Ritzy”.

Attached is an updated version of the proposal that follows an initial review by myself, Bjorn, and Mike M.  Mike and I also met with Dave and the other proposed committers two weeks ago to further discuss the technology and their planned contributions.  I also spent some time with Dave last week to discuss the various facets of leading Eclipse projects.  Ritzy has been in use at TI for several years now, both by internal development groups and by partners.  Dave already has a good understanding of the three communities we service in Eclipse.  He asked several very good questions about transparency, open source vs. commercial challenges, and the Eclipse development process.  I believe he and the Ritzy team will be a good addition to DSDP.

Please offer any comments you have on this mailing list.  Dave is already subscribed.  He’s out this week, so responses may be delayed.  I’d like to invite him to the next PMC meeting to meet everyone and answer any questions you have.

Doug
