As a point of clarification, a management data repository (MDR) is defined by the CMDBf spec as any data source that implements a CMDBf query service, and optionally registration service.  There is no requirement that SML is used, although we believe that SML makes an excellent choice for expressing the payload of a graph query response.

Previously in COSMOS, an MDR needed to implement the data manager interface in order to be "managed" in COSMOS.  However, I believe this requirement is being relaxed in the future (correct?).
