The toolchain metadata are used by the Managed Build System to generate the command-lines in makefiles.  A 'makefile project' leaves specification of the makefile contents (commands) entirely to the user, so much of the toolchain metadata and option settings aren't relevant in that context.

Some of the toolchain metadata will still be relevant in the makefile context, for example association with error parsers, binary parsers, and anything else that is tool-dependent.

Unless, of course, I have completely misunderstood *your* problem.  :-)

As a final note, you can change the flavour of your project after the fact:  in the "C/C++ Build" property page, just enable automatic makefile generation to convert a makefile project to managed, or vice-versa.

available. It seems that which type of project you initially select  
from the list determines whether these settings are available or not.

Note that this doesn't appear to be an issue with the Objective-C  
toolchain; if I create a new Executable/MacOSX GCC then I see the  
settings, and if I create a Makefile/MacOSX GCC then I don't see the  
settings.  So it seems to be independent of what the toolchain  
actually is.

This could of course be a complete misunderstanding on my part, but I  
don't see what determines whether these items are shown or not.
