If we're going to be good eclipse citizens, then an EMF-based serialization
format might make a good options - particularly if we're going to be
persisting assets that may wind up in an RCP-hosted viewer. There are a
number of Eclipse projects (TPTP being a prime example) that use EMF as a
storage format.

A native XML database might be a good solution since BPEL is dealing with 
XML data already. Their is an open source project to provide a web 
services interface to XML databases that surport the XML:DB API. The 
project is called Montag and can be found at 
http://montag.sourceforge.net/index.html.
