I would find it very useful to be able to edit an XML document using just the
design view. For this to be really feasible, I should be able to change an
element(/attribute/etc.) name on the fly, without inserting a new element,
preferably by just clicking on the name

This is a great idea, but we don't have people to work on this just now.  It might become possible for 3.0, but we would accept high quality patches, regardless.
