under preferences --> java --> compiler --> errors/warnings, section 'unecessary
code', there is a preference called 'unused imports'. i set this to 'ignore',
but i still get compiler warnings about unused imports.

Did you modify this preference for entire workspace or for a project?

my bad :-)

that particular project had particular configuration, not the workspace 
configuration. i was reporting perceived bug when i modified workspace 
preferences.

when i modified project's particular configuration, unused imports were ignored.

No problem, but please, do not change bug resolution (ie. set to FIXED), this is
developper responsibility.
Here, as there was no code change, we will resolve it as INVALID, not as FIXED
(this distinguish an user error from developper error...)
=> reopen to change status
