i had a .properties file open and wanted to do 'show in packages view'
no such action was available in the context menu

The property editor is the standard text editor and it cannot know about Java.

To enable this would require a workbench provided "Show in" mechanism. This 
would be a useful addition but needs thoughts.

Moving to platform UI for consideration.

Bug 13560 mentions that a generic Show in feature would be helpful.
We should have Show in Navigator, Show in Packages view perhaps using a 
workbench extension point.

When we discussed bug 25731 we decided that JDT should remove the Show in 
Package Explorer context menu item. The Package Explorer should instead have 
a "sync with editor" tool item like the Navigator does.

It is not clear that "Sync with editor" is the way to go.
