How to replicate : 
Use family example. Set property "Color Providers" to True in .gendModel and then override the methods getBackground & getForegound in the the *ItemProvider.java.
The issue :
The color applies to the tables in the properties tab but not in the model explorer, diagrams, tree views and tables.
