Since we can just type ahead in most lists or trees to find an item starting with the keys we typed, I recently tried this in the staging view in my file list, when I was looking for a specific file in the changes. That does not work, and may be some additional effort to support. However, since there is already a filter field available, what about just focusing the filter field (and sending the current key), whenever a key for an alphanum character is pressed in the staging area? That way, a user automatically gets "redirected" into the filter, when trying to navigate to a file name by typing it.
