the 'edit' dialog on the template pref page gives no real added valueand can be 
eliminated - all editing could be done in-place (just make the table editable)

Edit dialog box might evolve int he future. Also error handling makes it a pain
to keep the preference page in a consistent state. A transactional add/edit of
templates is much easier to implement and understand. We should leave it as is 
for now.
