To me it happens quite often that clicking on a text file with an extension Eclipse does not or no longer know, a dialog opens that says "Editors available on marketplace". This is very distracting. If I wanted a certain editor I had already installed it. Similar holds for file associations. It does not make sense to define file associations for files with dynamic extensions. Please add an option to let Eclipse quietly use a text editor as fallback for unknown file extensions.
Created attachment 264361 [details] Screenshot Mickael, I suggest you add the option in the marketplace client: Do not ask again for unknown file extensions and [DROPDOWN_WITH_CHOICE, like Use Text Editor]. @Alexander, you can change that in the preferences, see screenshot.
Thank you very much. That's exactly what I wanted to have. Seems that the default configuration had changed. Didn't find that option when searching for 'marketplace' in the preferences dialog. Note: On Windows the option is somewhat hidden at the bottom of the File Associations dialog.
(In reply to Alexander Veit from comment #2) > Didn't find that option when searching > for 'marketplace' in the preferences dialog. Please open a new bug for the MPC component asking them to add them "marketplace" as search term for the "File association" page. > Note: On Windows the option is somewhat hidden at the bottom of the File > Associations dialog. Yes, in 4.7 we moved it up, to make it more visible.
Done https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=502043
Seems like the initial request already has a solution in Eclipse IDE, so I'm closing this one as WORKSFORME.
I think mpc should allow to set this option, or allow the user to jump to the preferences.
(In reply to Lars Vogel from comment #6) > I think mpc should allow to set this option, or allow the user to jump to > the preferences. Ok. Can you please relabel the bug accordingly then?

Created attachment 264504 [details] Neon MPC dialog Here is the current dialog as it is in Neon. I believe what you're asking for is already available.
As I understood Lars, he asks for the dialog to either directly allow the user to change the "Open unassociated files with" strategy as they currently can on the File Associations preference page, or to provide a link to that page to make it easier for the user to do this.
Gnahhh, brain fart. Of course the link is already there. Maybe we should reword it to make it more clear that it allows to change the strategy?
If someone think it's worth it (cost = more complex UI), we can imagine another radio "Let me select an existing editor", that would open the "Open With" menu. However, this would only work with IFile I guess.
In my case, I was working in a no-internet environment when I got the 'searching Marketplace' dialog (a lot). It would be nice to have something on that pop-up that tells me where to change this. I too was searching for 'Marketplace' with no success.
I hit 'save' too soon. I don't necessarily need something to make the change right on the dialog, just need to know how to do so.

However as it's not related to the initial request, can you please report it in a new bug to track things more easily?
