Some users seem to expect "Check for updates" to also check for major updates of the IDE (that require an addition of the new release site). However, once they're facing the "No updates found" dialog, they have to search about how to enable major updates, and this is a several steps workflow. In order to save a step in this workflow, the "No updates found" message could be improved and refined: for example, it could say "No updates found in available software sites.", which already gives a hint to user that they have to manage a list of available sites, and even better, the "available sites" should be a link opening the preference page, so that they immediately know how to tweak those sites.
New Gerrit change created: https://git.eclipse.org/r/62040
@Pascal @Ian: Is this something you can look at soon? I believe those change would have a high value in the "easier way to upgrade to new release" story; as it would replace user confusion by user understanding where updates are searched.
On the other hand, it is not really that much more helpful since it does not tell them which repository to enable or to add when they are looking for major updates.
Right. But this change is not focused only on major updates of the IDE, it affects all updates scenario where users seem to be missing to manage their available p2 repositories. It's not meant to guide directly the user to enable major release update, but more to make user aware of this preference page that has so much importance for them at that time.
We're getting closer from UI freeze. Does this require any change before being applied?
+1 for integrating this change.
There is a Code-Review +2 from Pascal but no 'Change has been successfully merged into the git repository' from Gerrit Code Review. Is it intentional?
