Wikipedia is now using VisualEditor (WYSIWYG wiki editor) on mainstream. I tested the tool [1] and I think it is really good for writing documentation, because it is immediate and it reduces barriers in providing contributions. Eclipse Wiki is powered by MediaWiki [2], as Wikipedia. Probably it is possible to integrate the VisualEditor module also in the Eclipse Wiki. With this tool the Eclipse Wiki users will be encouraged to contribute documents and reviews. On the long run this will improve the wiki user experience and it will increase the perceived value of the Eclipse Community. references: [1] https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor:Test [2] https://wiki.eclipse.org/Special:Version
Hallo, Webmaster! I'm currently writing some long documents on the Eclipse Wiki, and I sometimes think it is a painful exercise. The wiki is the only tool we have to "easily produce" documentation, and I will still use it. However, I think we need to improve the writing system so that contributors will enjoy adding and improving the documentation. Please, see this as an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFEBPZBbHp8
Adding Lars in c/c, as I think he can help giving his opinion to understand if this is a good idea to improve the quality of the wiki, and to increase the number of people who can contribute.
Mikaël, It would be great if you could take a look at this bug. - I don't know how much effort requires integrating this module in Eclipse wiki. - I guess it is easy to understand how much this can help the contributors in writing good documentation in the Eclipse wiki.
Patrick, Mikael is not on the webmaster team per se. We will look at this next time we perform a Wiki upgrade. We tend to batch these together.
Thanks !
We won't be investing any resources into this aspect of our infra, as it is either deprecated, or it will be soon. We encourage projects to migrate to GitHub or Eclipse GitLab (https://gitlab.eclipse.org). Please see: Eclipse Foundation service cleanup superbug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=577150
