I suggest to make the Show Static Variables in the Variables view enabled by default.

Is there a reason it's initially off? I had to google to find it and it's not just me unable to find it:

Yes, I think we should be consistent here.

This has the same problem as mentioned in Bug 358681. Problem with Compatibility layer is visible here as well.

It's actually a long standing issue, see bug 358681 comment 20.
