GMF Runtime offers some components that allows to display the diagram outline like the one shown at the Ecore Diagram: http://wiki.eclipse.org/images/5/56/EcoreDiagramOverview_tmb.png

While the canvas part of the outline is not difficult to show and normally works fine, users have a problems of implementing the tree part of the view.

GMF Tooling has to generate the glue code that allows better configuration of the tree contents of the outline, possibly similar to (or reused from) the code generated for navigator. 

Additionally it may be usefull to just allow toolsmith to use its own implementation of the tree part of the outline while having the canvas part from GMF Runtime. E.g, in case of GMFT+Xtext integration, the tree part may come from the Xtext-generated outline for text editor.
