As the summary expresses, it would be very useful to see the currently checkout branch beside the repository in 'Git Staging' tab, to be sure about what branch the staging area will be committed to.

Good idea! It would also be nice if the branch status was included (the arrows as seen in the decorations of package explorer and Git Repositories view).

Yes, that is what I imagined.

Thanks for improving this, although such minor tweaks usually won't bring the house down, it is these goodies that amount to usability.
