Description Carolyn MacLeod CLA 2013-05-13 14:39:37 EDT
It would be nice/useful to have a KeyBinding to open the navigation menu from the keyboard (from anywhere on the page, i.e. globally and within editor).

I am thinking maybe Alt+M (M for menu) or Alt+N (N for Navigator).
These shortcuts tend to generally be available in desktop/laptop browsers, even with a screen reader running. Alt+[any key] is typically used to drop down a menu from the menu bar. Typical browser menu shortcut choices are F,E,V,B,A,S,T,H,P,D:
alt+F (File), alt+E (Edit), alt+V (View), alt+B (Bookmarks), alt+a (Favorites), alt+s (History), alt+T (Tools), alt+H (Help), alt+P (Preferences), alt+D (go to Address bar) and just alt (to go to the menu in Chrome, or the menu bar in FF and IE).

If we add this KeyBinding, then (after bug 406827 is fixed) the user could type alt+N N to navigate to the Navigator, or alt+N G to navigate to the Git Repos page, etc (we will have to use S for Search and second letter for Shell and Sites) or they can type alt+N down arrow to see/hear the items in the Navigation menu.

Alt+G might be ok, too (G for Go to). Precedent for using G shortcut to "Go to" is in Twitter and Gmail (they do not use alt, but we should use alt so that we can have a consistent shortcut in the editor and globally).
