Sort of a FUP to bug 368483, another way we could improve startup performance would be to cache the default library source locations for a JRE. For example, on the Mac, when Eclipse starts we walk over the default libraries and look up their source locations - for each default library of the JRE - the same way we did when you added the JRE in the preferences.
The current location of JRE info caching is: <path_to_your_workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.jdt.launching\libraryInfos.xml We could simply add the source / javadoc / index location to this cache, then would we would only have to recompute if the JRE changed on-disk
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant. -- The automated Eclipse Genie.
