Showing a file in the history view is not of much use unless you manually toggle the view to "Show all changes of the selected resource and its children." This should be automatically toggled on when right clicking a file and selecting show in history. Maybe it should even be toggled on whenever there is a resource selected if the view is linked.

Each Team provider decides what to do.  What SCM are you using?
