This is a perfect place for an ARIA live region. Probably with aria-live="assertive" aria-atomic="true". http://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria/states_and_properties#aria-live
Here's a few examples of using aria-live: http://accessibleajax.clcworld.net/ The "Sign up for the CLC Fan Club!" example might be pretty close.
