Description DJ Houghton CLA 2003-02-18 17:02:02 EST
build i-2003-02-18 (1130), win2k, j9sc20030214

Do Java editor search problems belong in JDT/UI or Platform/Search?

I have a Java editor and I double-click inside a method on an assignment
statement to an instance variable and choose Search. I get the message:

"The operation is unavailable on the current selection. Please select a valid
Java element name."

Note:
- this happens both when searching for references in Workspace and Hierarchy
- search works OK when you select the var in the outline view
- also works OK when you select the variable declaration

It works for me. I tested the following:

- JUnit setup
- TestCase.setName
- select fName in fName= name;
- search->References->Workspace

Can you please steps to reproduce the problem you are seeing.

Unfortuanately it happens everytime for me.
- I tried closing all editors and doing a full re-build and it is still a
problem.
- The problem also persists across sessions.
- I also opened a (class) editor on the class TestCase and tried to find
references to fName and I got the same problem.

I installed the new build and am using it on an old workspace. Would it help to
send you my workspace?

Does it work for a fresh workspace with JUnit in it ?
Comment 4 DJ Houghton CLA 2003-02-19 11:13:14 EST
works ok when I:
- start with a fresh workspace
- File -> import -> external plug-ins -> junit
- open TestCase
- select fName in setName() and search for references.

Moving to JDT/Core since I assume a problem with the index/search engine.
Comment 6 Philipe Mulet CLA 2003-02-19 12:20:15 EST
Feels like a dup of bug 32217
Comment 7 Kent Johnson CLA 2003-02-21 10:57:37 EST
DJ said that he could no longer reproduce this in the latest drop.

From the error message, it looks like it was a position problem in editor.
