Description Pascal Rapicault CLA 2009-09-25 15:23:53 EDT
The absence of category in some sites is making it hard for end users to find what to install (see bug #274077). Given that we now have the option to generate metadata from the feature export, I think it would be a great addition to automatically create a category with the name of the feature being exported.
This option should be on by default.

The category.xml option does allow for categories for the features, but it is very heavyweight. I would like to see an easier to use solution.
Comment 2 Ian Bull CLA 2009-09-25 15:36:08 EDT
I thought this whole thing came up when we decided to include the ability to
specify a category XML on export. I can't remember why we didn't do this.
Comment 3 Pascal Rapicault CLA 2009-09-25 20:02:20 EDT
The easy solution is the following:
- When the user does not specify a category.xml, and the "generate category" option is on (the default is on), then PDE (not sure if it is build or UI) automatically generates a category. The information for the category being produced are obtained from the feature using the feature name as a category name, the feature id suffixed with something for the category id and the feature version for the category version.

Thanks Pascal,

I'll take this one.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.

Vikas, please check whether we still want to do this.

I will have a look at this for 4.14M1
