Description Andre Costa CLA 2007-03-13 16:28:26 EDT
Build ID: M20070212-1330

Steps To Reproduce:
1.press any Shift+Alt+[key] combination (eg. Shift+Aalt+R or Shift+Alt+J)
2.the "bare key" (eg. "R" or "J" for the examples above) is typed instead, messing with editor text
3.

More information:
I still could not realize what exactly triggers the problem, but the thing is that shortcuts like Shift+Alt+J, Shift+Alt+R etc. "stop working" every now and then, and the bare key is input instead, resulting in errors (eg. for the examples above, J and R would have been inserted at the cursor position).

Sometimes such shortcuts can be "re-enabled" by moving mouse cursor out of Eclipse window and then back in, but it doesn't work all the time.

(I even thought this could be a keyboard problem, but checking with 'xev' application shows me keyboard is working fine; also 80% of my desktop shortcuts use Alt key)

Other keyboard shortcuts (eg. ctrl+c, ctrl+v, ctrl+/, ctrl+i etc.) work fine 100% of the time. The problem seems to be indeed related to Shift+Alt+* shortcuts (which is a pain, because I must then use the mouse for all refactorings...).

System is Fedora Core 6, running with all latest updates (GNOME version is 2.16.3). Window manager is Beryl 0.1.9999.2, Java is JDK 6.

... I'm not sure this is a JDT-text bug, please advise.

Sorry I cannot reproduce. Maybe some program (e.g. IME) acts on a Shift+Alt+key combination.

Please reopen if you have more details/info.

I just tried it on fluxbox window manager here at work (original post was referring to my configuration at home) and I can't reproduce the behavior either, so it seems to be related to Beryl's keyboard management. It could be indeed catching some key combos before apps.

The weird thing is that shift+alt+* combos do work some of the times -- but once they "stop working", they won't work anymore until the "lose-gain focus" hack mentioned is applied =/

I'll try it ASAP at home with fluxbox also to see if the problem goes away. If it works with fluxbox at home, I'll file a bug on Beryl's bug tracker (it would be interesting if someone else using Beryl as the window manager could confirm this is reproducible).

Ok, I just confirmed it was a conflict with Beryl's shortcuts settings (Eclipse worked just fine with fluxbox here at home as well, which then turned my attention to Beryl). There were a couple of key combos with Shift+Alt assigned to some of Beryl's actions; I disabled them and now Eclipse works as expected regarding Shift+Alt+[key] combos.

(should have checked this in the first place... =/ sorry for the noise)

Daniel: thks for your time anyway. I updated the summary so that it better describes what the problem was.

Marking the bug as closed (should actually be NOTABUG ;-))
