Description Nils Kilden-Pedersen CLA 2006-09-21 09:09:37 EDT
I am aware that this is a duplicate of 107505, but I don't find the reasons given ("Most of us no longer use the Outline view but prefer the quick views") valid.
Most of the people I know use the outline view, including myself. I presume you write software for the masses, not just for yourself.
Having inherited methods in the standard Outline view is important for the same reasons it was important for Quick Outline, and I don't see why the code base for both views are not the same, unless copy/paste coding is rampant.
Please reconsider this.

> don't see why the code base for both views are not the same,
Amongst other reasons, the Outline view is a view which has always to be up to date (i.e. react to changes) while the Quick Outline does not need to listen to changes: it is a snapshot at the time you open it.

>I presume you write software for the masses, not just for yourself.
We write Open Source software which means everyone from those masses can join and provide a good quality patch that implements the feature.

Back in early 2004, for Eclipse 2.1, bug 8625 was re-opened and then closed again.
Now this is being done again without explanation. Just because "most of you", whoever that is, don't use Outline view anymore, does not mean that there is not a lot of people still relying on that view. Please explain why this feature request is being closed as a knee-jerk reaction, rather than being considered seriously?

"We write Open Source software which means everyone from those masses can join
and provide a good quality patch that implements the feature."
That's a straw man argument. For a project the size of Eclipse, it would take considerable effort for a casual programmer to submit features of any scope, which is why the developers of Eclipse are paid professionals, and not some team of hackers working in their spare time from their parents basement. Please don't use the "open source" argument to crush any feature request you can't be bothered with. It's the worst of open-source. IBM is still paying, right?

Please don't reopen again. If someone is willing to sponsor resources on this that's great: they can simply comment and reopen bug 8625.
