Since we now are getting alot of other types of archives witch only differs from jars in the extension. "library./sar/rar/spring/" and so on. Eclipse should support jars with extensions other that jar and zip.
This could be achieved through an extension point, where a pluggable archive reader could be contributed. Such an extension point needs still to be defined though.
I wonder if JDT needs to care about different file formats. Instead of adding archives like jar, rar, etc to the build path we could support adding directories trough EFS (http://wiki.eclipse.org/EFS). With this we already have a ready to use "type-independent" system to support a) different file formats trough efs implementations or even funny things like remote libraries.
Comment 0 just asks that zip archives with other extensions be supported. This was done as part of the work for bug 182360 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 182360 ***
