Feature Request: Editor option to show/hide formatting marks It would be really nice to have a whitespace indicator in all the editors. This is like the MS Word Processor fuction Options -> View -> Show/Hide Formatting marks. This feature when enabled would indicate by overlaying a visual indicator of the type of whitespace, this would a useful tool to allow the programmer to: * Clearly see where a tab or a space is being used. * Clearly see if there is any trailing whitespace before the end-of-line character. * Clearly see if a non-standard end-of-line character/sequence is being used on a specific line. Syntax Colouring preference option for background option: One part of this function could be to subtly change the background colour of each character location that makes up the document. So it would be possible to see trailing whitespace and if blank lines are truly blank (or actually have space/tabs) on those lines.
This is similar to bug/enhancement request bug 22712. This one may eventually be closed as a dup of 22712, but, I'm going to leave open for a bit since some of the "highlighting" ideas are a bit novel and deserve some thought. Thanks
I'm going to go ahead and mark this as a duplicate of bug 22712 which has been fixed in Eclipse 3.3 which means it's in WTP 2.0. The show/hide whitespace feature does not have any cool background syntax highlighting, but it does use different marks to differentiate between a space, tab, end of line character. If you're still interested in having the background syntax highlighting preference, it'd be better for you to open a bug on the Eclipse text editor, since we're automatically picking up this feature. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 22712 ***
I'm just going to change the target to 2.0 to reflect that this should be fixed in wtp 2.0
