Numerous times I haven't noticed that a progress bar is in effect because it's located in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Please have all progress bars be front and centered [e.g., "Building workspace: (nn%)", "Refreshing workspace: (nn%)", "Refresh SVN status cache", etc.].

By "front", you mean a dialog on top?

You should already get this, if you disable the following preference:
General > Always run in background

Thanks but 'Window | Preferences | General | Always run in background' was already unchecked.
