Hmm, here's a coincidence.

QGis 2.10 was released today (it's an Open Source GIS written in c++ & Python).

What's top of the list of new features?  A "widget" that can display a
statistical overview of a selected data item:

The supporting code class (QgsStatisticalSummary) may provide some
good tips on providing Descriptive Statistics.
