Re: [recommenders-dev] Google Summer of Code 2013 - Proposals/Ideas?

Hi Marcel,

It is great to hear there will be a GSOC this year :)
I will find Tong and discuss with him later this week.
We are both away from school on our Chinese New Year vacation... (how time flies!)

BTW, we are trying to put down some technical details of the project on a project wiki page.
Unfortunately, we failed to find out how to create a wiki page for our incubator project.

It shouldn't be more than going to a wiki page like http://wiki.eclipse.org/Recommenders/ArgsCompletion and clicking on the "edit" link. You should be logged in before using your bugzilla id.

Also, we are not sure about where and how to put our ideas of GSOC on the Eclipse wiki :(

See http://wiki.eclipse.org/Google_Summer_of_Code_2013 for more details. There is also a link to an ideas page where you can add your content. See the 2012 pages for examples. These ideas should be very brief - just sketching the idea. Students that eventually show up just need a place to start looking at. Please be aware that many "students" do not really apply to start the GSOC. We are looking for students that actually express a deep interest in the project and passion. In the best case they start working on their "fully-dressed" proposal themselves so we quickly learn about their motivation.

Best,
Marcel

Could you give us some advice on the use of the wiki?

Thanks,
Cheng

Hi guys,

I just received the announcement that Google will do another GSOC in 2013. This is great news.

So what's next? We have to come up with a bunch of short proposals and make them accessible to students, i.e., we have to publish them on the eclipse.org wiki. Then we have to announce them on various social media channels and should  (subscribe and) listen to soc-dev@xxxxxxxxxxx to find interested students - or ask some students you know that may be interested.

The Darmstadt Connection will do it's topic brainstorming next Thursday as part of it's weekly standup (Darmstadt do you listen? ;-)). If you have any ideas it would also be great if you could announce them here on the list and/or directly put them on the Eclipse wiki.

Best,
Marcel

Hi Zhang,

I am not sure whether such tasks can be a topic for GSOC... Could you please give us some suggestions?

my first suggestion would be to ask Tong if he could imagine to dedicate the whole summer to this project. As student a student can apply for the program and I guess it's a nice reference in his CV.

I don't know enough about your IDE integration to give other opportunities. It needs to be a feature that can be accomplished by a student during a summer. It shouldn't be in an area that is supposed to change heavily (except you have a very strong contact to that person).

Sorry, I can't help much here yet :(

Hi Marcel,

Sorry for my late response. Just occupied by activities at the end of semester...

Tong and I have a lot of work to do for Precise, including reorganizing the project, writing sufficient test suites, incorporating Tong's new optimization etc..
As feature enhancements, we are planning to add the support for object creations (as arguments) and the stepwise completion for complex argument expressions.
For example, when Precise is about to recommend a method call, we may leverage the call completion functionality to improve the recommendation.
Still we have to figure out more detailed design for the enhancements.

I am not sure whether such tasks can be a topic for GSOC... Could you please give us some suggestions?

Thanks,
Cheng

Hi guys,

I'd like to draw your attention to the upcoming GSOC 2013 which starts in March. A GSOC is a nice opportunity to get students attracted to your project and have them implementing important parts of your systems.

Cheng, Doug, if you like to offer a GSOC topic this year for Snipmatch or Precise, it may be the right time to start thinking about it and write a draft for the Eclipse Wiki page.
If you already know a student who is interested to work on the project as part of a GSOC, you may also get in contact with him in the next weeks ;-)

Best,
Marcel
