FWIW, I still remember one of the NetBean developers doing a 'screenshot of the week' which showed some cool feature he was implementing. If we had the 'Feature of the week' or 'Tip of the week', we could easily promote this out to the community.

 I agree. But for marketing (actually, more like psychology) reasons, you are more likely to get eyeballs if you focus on what's new.

But regardless, the most important point is to create a steady drumbeat of bit-sized content.
