I also don't like the idea of the 3-SNAPSHOT branch and I'd rather keep the not-backward compatible PR open (with a 'future' tag), or merge it to a feature branch (no strong preference among these 2 options). This said, we should probably try reducing the need for non backward compatible changes to the minimum.
