I think that the newbie knows only this: "I need Eclipse". Because was told by a teacher, friend or employer, or Google. This is how newbies come to eclipse.org.

I believe this conversation should be first done with the Eclipse Marketing team.

A newbie doesn't know it, it learns it fron scratch. So I don't think newbies are the one who would suffer the most from that change, actually, the legacy community (== us) are the one who probably would be the most confused.
