Re: [ide-dev] An "IDE Working Group"

I would recommend getting funding upfront. Getting funding after the fact will be difficult.

Ian,

Thanks for sending the link.

Do you have recommendations on funding? From my understanding (as it is with LTS), the funding is required for joining a working group. I am just wondering if an IDE working group should use that same model or have a different model where joining is free but the working group sets up a funding program for IDE development and members are expected to participate in that.

If the LTS model is the typical model then we likely need to discuss the different options for the various member types and how we allow developers/contractors to access the working group.

As for the marketing aspect … we already have a bug open to create the "/ide" page. One proposal in the bug report was that the working group would maintain this page. Right now it's the Tools PMC but I don't think that's any better. We also need a place to advertise the working group and the funding program etc. But we can work on that later.

Here is the process document for creating a working group.http://eclipse.org/org/industry-workgroups/industry_wg_process.php

The companies forming the working group need to be Eclipse Foundation members. You also need to have a defined purpose and a description of what funding, or not, is required for organizations to join the working group.

FWIW, I would not start a working group with a marketing focus. Everyone know about the Eclipse Java IDE and we already have very healthy market share. To me, the challenge is to create a pool of resources to fund developers to improve JDT. Better web sites or web pages are not going to fix any of the technology problems.

A working group might be how companies can participate that don’t want to provide developers/committers. We find a group of companies that are willing to spend $50K/each to fund some developers to work on JDT.

I thought about this as well. This working group could focus on marketing aspects (such as the /ide and /java pages) as well as coming up with a sustainable model for funding platform development.

Ian, can you get more details on how the process for creating such a working group looks like? Do we need to prepare/submit a paper? Are there minimum requirements for the number of participants, etc?
