Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] Drop 32 bit Linux support in 4.9?

Andrey,

Having read the bug, I'm suspecting I missed some subtle point in your questions.  The points isn't so much about asking how many people use it, but rather about asking if anyone on the list actually cares about it.  But I doubt anyone on the list has a ratty old 32 bit machine, so it seems highly unlikely anyone cares about it personally; perhaps their organization cares though.  Most relevant to the first question seems to me to be the number of users out in the wild who use/need it and also highly relevant to the second question (my opinion on the matter of dropping it) also seems to be the number of real users.  So I posted some stats to provide us a basis for forming such an opinion.

But perhaps an unstated question is, "Does anyone care enough to invest effort in maintaining it, e.g., the referenced bug".  Even if the number of people who need/want 32 bit Linux were large, the answer to "do I care enough to maintain it?", might still be no, even if I cared, I might actually have no clue how to maintain native code.  Definitely the download stats indicate that 32 bit Linux is a relatively small "market segment" for Eclipse and that no great harm would come to our market if this segment were dropped.  That certainly factors into any decision of how to proceed. If the effort is large, and the market segment is small, we (the developers and the community at large) might all be better off with the developers investing in other more relevant ways...

Regards,
Ed

I suppose that this mailing list is likely not the list of people who would need it.  Best to look at download stats, e.g., the following suggests that a few hundred people have downloaded the JEE package for 32 bit linux.

Hi all,

I'm wondering if someone still uses/needs Linux 32 bit builds?

I would like to know your opinion if we could drop 32 bit Linux support in 4.9?

Reasoning / discussion please to: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=536766.
