Is it possible to  map https://git.eclipse.org:29418 to a virtual host
http://gerrit.eclipse.org. That would  make cloning from a Gerrit
enabled repository easier for us (don't have to remember the port no etc).

29418 is the ssh port for Gerrit, so there is no point to try https:// on this port.

Gerrit's Jetty server is listening at https://git.eclipse.org/r/.

If you are using the Mylyn Gerrit connector [1] you even don't need to remember

this URL as the Gerrit connector has this URL already preconfigured.
