[cross-project-issues-dev] Smoke testing of Eclipse 4.1 with participating Indigo plug-ins...

Hi everyone,

As a part of M7 milestone week for the Eclipse 4 team, I decided to try and point p2 at the Indigo site, setup the dialog in category mode, tick all the root tree nodes, and see where that would lead me.

Unfortunately, they didn't all want to install as I had to filter out a couple of components.

----------

Application Development Frameworks
-Scout SDK (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=343991)

Eclipse RT Target Platform Components (not of interest for the purpose of this experiment)

Modeling
-Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF) Runtime (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=343975)
-Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF) Runtime Examples (unchecked due to the above being missing)
-Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF) Runtime SDK (unchecked due to the above being missing)

Linux Tools (they won't install on my Windows machine due to platform filters)

Programming Languages
-C/C++ Call Graph Visualization (won't install due to filters)
-Object Teams Development Tooling (Incubation) (also would not install on recent 3.7 installs when I tried so I just unchecked it)
-Object Teams Equinox Integration (Incubation) (also would not install on recent 3.7 installs when I tried so I just unchecked it)

Uncategorized (these are EPP features)

----------

After a long wait, the installation completed successfully. I had some issues on the first restart but a second attempt seemed to have magically ironed out the problems. I'm not sure if it was a startup timing problem or not as I got a lot of "Too many open files" ZipExceptions in my workspace's log so the restart failure might've just been bad luck on my part with my system choking on the low availability of file handles.

I tried playing with the install a bit and have found a few problems so far in both our own code and in adopting plug-in's code (making undocumented assumptions and/or using internals that have now gone the way of the dodo). I'm sure there are more out there but as I don't actually know how to use all of these plug-ins so I know for a fact that I have not really "exercised" this mammoth of an installation.

If you would like to help and do some real testing of your plug-ins on top of Eclipse 4.1 (as I've only just been clicking randomly), please download one of our latest integration builds and give it a whirl.

There's a list of known issues at the wiki page below.

If you find any problems, please open a bug and let us know the difference you're seeing between 3.x and 4.x.

Thank you for your time.
