Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] List to Newsgroup gateway

We've tried bidirectional newsgroups/mailing lists in the past, and each time we've had to revert the link.

It seems we just can't get past the confusion of either a) committers receiving tons of user discussion in their email inbox, which is distracting or b) users inquiring about committer discussion they aren't expected to understand (ie, "I am new to Eclipse and to your project, and downloaded N-20101112-0947 you posted 2 minutes ago and it doesn't work")

:-(

jetty briefly had a newsgroup as well but using it was so unnatural we

if there was a simple bidirectional conduit then I suspect we would
once more support newsgroups for jetty...

It could also make sense to have a projects mailing list mirrored to a
newsgroup. This makes it easier for the casual reader to catch-up on
action while not having to manage mails from the project, it is also
(arguably) a better archive then then the mailman archives in terms of
ease of access (web indexing) and usability (available tooling).
A bunch of Eclipse mailing lists are available as newsgroups via GMANE.
Whenever I need on I just submit a subscription request. Usually it
takes a 1-2 days till it's subscribed and available on GMANE.
