I've installed the Linux distro's version of 'ant' (1.7.0) which puts it in the PATH..  But there are other ants in /shared/common.

Actually, a different reason:

cannot stat /var/lock/cvs: No such file or directory

Sorry, that was my bad. I've created /var/lock/cvs and confirmed I can checkout from cvs -d :local:/cvsroot/....
