Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] SDK's on Galileo?

Once again it's the debate over "do users want source and docs? or just the runtimes?"

For example... as a PDT "extender", you would want source and doc; an a PDT "end user" you only want to use PDT to write PHP, but not build plugins on top of it... so the runtime is sufficient.

Last year for Ganymede, we had BOTH runtimes and SDKs which we were told to relabel as "end user" and "extender" to help w/ this split; this year it was decided to just include SDKs but not the smaller features. (I'm not sure what the rationale was.)

Frankly, I'd rather see both options in the p2 UI too - so I can decide which set of features I want. Most projects provide both runtime and sdk zips, so why not provide those two features in Galileo, too?

Hi Fitz,
I guess what I'm really after is the same contents as you have in the SDK today, but without Sources and without Developer Docs since I don't need those as a user. If "Runtime" is an improper name for what I need, then I'm not sure how to name is instead... Cheers,

    Hey Martin...

The SDK version in DTP's case includes source. The non-SDK version
in DTP's case does not. And we really don't have a "runtime"
    component persay.

There's an open bug on our side for discussing our current
distribution (i.e. SDK = source, non-SDK = no source) to add a third
option (frameworks or runtime) that doesn't include source or any of
the tools for developing DTP extensions. But that didn't get
    anywhere for this release.

    Hi all,
I notice that there is "PDT SDK" and "DTP SDK" on Galileo, but not
    the corresponding runtimes.
As an end user, I'm not interested in the SDK bits of PDT and DTP.
    Could you folks contribute the
    runtime features as well?
I remember that in Ganymede, we tried to avoid SDK's on the
    coordinated site. Is there any
guideline for SDK's on Galileo? I'd propose a guideline that just
    contributing an SDK without
the respective runtime should be deprecated.
Thoughts? Cheers, -- *Martin Oberhuber*, Senior Member of Technical Staff, *Wind River*
