Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] Degraded respons times from ecipse.org

FWIW, my experiences with eclipse.org on Thursdays and Fridays have for the past month been... less than spectacular. I'm talking CVS commit/checkout performance, scp'ing files to download1.eclipse.org or dev.eclipse.org, wiki slowdowns (not so much with reading, just writing), bugzilla searches and commits... I blame in part the release train as we're all pushing out builds on Thursdays/Fridays and there's a lot of mirroring going on as a result.

For those who use UM every week to update their various plugins, there's the issue of hammering eclipse.org by default instead of the closest mirror when pulling down all those new bits. I recall seeing a bug opened against UM asking that eclipse.org be listed LAST as it is now for zip downloads, but I haven't seen in 3.3M3 that that's been done yet. However, this bug 142910 seems to have been implemented, so you can now have Eclipse pick a mirror for you and also schedule downloads and checks at a regular interval (eg., once a week or every time the platform starts up).

[142910] Usability: Option to automatically select the default mirror site
[159459 ] Move eclipse.org site to bottom of mirrors list if using MirrorsURL in site.xml

I don't know if UM usage is contributing to the slowdowns at eclipse.org on Thu/Fri, but the last time I looked EMF was more than 80% UM installs vs. zip downloads, so if that traffic isn't being mirrored and the same is true for other projects, this might certainly be a contributing factor to bandwidth saturation and server performance.

Oh, and I should mention that while bugzilla is always intermittent (fast, slow, blazingly fast, uphill molasses in winter...) most systems are at least acceptably fast the rest of the week.

Cheers & $0.02,

Nick

Hi guys,

I don't see it all the time, which also doesn't help you.  I just
clicked now, and it worked fine.  I'll keep experimenting and let you
know if I can narrow it down.
