RE: [cross-project-issues-dev] Getting started page

My thought was that it should be no harder to get started with Eclipse post
Callisto than it is today. Today, Java developers can download the Eclipse
SDK and get started. Assembling a Java IDE from parts on the Callisto
Discovery site is more work than that.

I could argue that you don't need the PDE in a non-SDK version. If you're
building stuff with the PDE, you probably want/need the source code as well.
But I digress.

I know that some people seem to think that the extra MBs are a big deal.
Certainly there are folks out there who compare Eclipse against NetBeans and
see that the Eclipse download is way bigger (this is one thing that their
evangelists like to pick on us for). I believe that the majority of folks
out there are just using Eclipse to build Java applications and do not
want/need the PDE+sources. I believe that most of these people don't
particularly care about the extra bulk.

That's an idea worth pursuing. I'll try and incorporate something like this
into the next iteration of the page.

I have this challenge as well and welcome your output. I have a student
working with me who has no prior experience with Eclipse. I've been trying
to solicit feedback from her as much as possible in this effort.

I don't mind you saying so. And I completely agree. There are several bugs
that currently discuss the need for an Eclipse IDE.
