Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] GEF RC2 bits delayed...

Randy, the sysadmin in RTP has been contacted to address this problem. The server crashed, has been rebooted and is now rsyncing content.  If you want to avoid it, go directly to the Ottawa mirror, the redirects have been disabled.

The reason we have internal mirrors is to reduce the amount of bandwidth and http sessions that IBM consumes on eclipse.org.    Platform Integration/Nightly builds are not sent to external mirrors to save bandwidth. For the platform, it's extraordinarily faster to download from a local mirror instead of always downloading from eclipse.org and consuming their bandwidth.

I've opened this bug
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=140218
against the webmaster to display the links to the ibm mirrors in "the find a mirror script"  for users resolving to ibm.com

I'd still like to keep the redirections for the platform. We run I-Builds every four hours during the milestones and RCs (like today!) to account for our geographically dispersed teams.  The redirections allow the developers to very quickly pick up their build.  Otherwise,  it takes about over and hour for each build to rsync to eclipse.org which leaves less time to examine a build and prepare for the next build submisssion.  In practice, redirecting http automatically is much easier than repeatedly explaining  which mirror to  use :-)

If you want to avoid the redirects this bug is also useful
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=112211

Kim, the internal mirror at IBM is down in RTP. We can not access the Ottawa one because we're forwarded back to RTP. It seems strange that this would be Steve's problem as he is in Ottawa.

It would help a lot if all of the automatic redirects were disabled. Downloaders can be prompted to use internal mirrors but should not be forced to use them. This was done for the GEF downloads directory but not for the base platform or other components.  IMO, as an open source site, eclipse.org should not be denying anyone access to its bits, which is all too often the net result of the redirects that are in place.

Hi Steve

I can't replicate the problem that you are having accessing the platform RC2 downloads site...it works for me. You can get to it another way other than the main eclipse.org page, go to

http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/S-3.2RC2-200604281315/index.php

Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] GEF RC2 bits delayed...

Update:

- We have posted RC2 bits as of yesterday.  However, the feature plugins for these bits are not correct and need to be updated in order for the Callisto update site to work properly.

RC2 link: http://download.eclipse.org/tools/gef/downloads/drops/S-3.2RC2-200605021359/index.php

We will be posting an RC2a later today to address the update site issues.  Note: this posting will include the same bits as RC2, so there is no need for projects to respin against it.

Additional Note:

- We've had grave difficulties trying to access the platform RC2 download site.  Our GEF build relies on this link in order to work.  Steps: go to main Eclipse downloads page, click on "All versions"... system hangs...

Regards,

Steve.

The bits are ready and tested but we're having difficulty promoting to RC2 on the web site and having the update sites updated.

If you want to test against the RC2 bits before it's officially posted on the web site, the jars we will be using will be:

http://download.eclipse.org/tools/gef/downloads/drops/I20060502-1359/index.php

Sorry for the trouble.  Hopefully it will be "officially" posted and ready for Callisto later tonight or early tommorrow morning.

Regards,

Steve.
