RE: [cross-project-issues-dev] Callisto experience take 2

In my understanding, the “simultaneous” in “simultaneous release of 10 projects” referred to both time and space:

  • Temporal co-locality: We go out on the same day.
  • Spatial co-locality: A user can get the “the bundle” without having to go to 10 different sites, and without 10x the work of downloading the platform alone.

We can discuss where to set the bar on ease of use and quality of the spatial portion of our simultaneous ship goal; I would hope that at least 80% of users who attempt to download Callisto succeed on their first attempt.

Shouldn’t our target user include both existing users already familiar with Eclipse as well as newbies to help continue driving increased adoption?  I agree all aspects of driving for a “single integrated product” is not a committed goal for Callisto (but perhaps should be for our next coordinated effort – we’ve certainly discussed such in the Planning Council long enough), but a Callisto that only experienced Eclipse experts can weed their way through seems to fall short of our committed goal (“simultaneously release ten projects” is probably an understatement of our intent).

Thanks,

Ed,
Thanks (psst, enter bugs, write them well, win some prizes - so far there are zero entries in the "greatbugs" contest so it should be easy to win).

And while I agree that we can make it easier to install/experience, I think this sentence in your email is the key point:

Just try walking through this and pretend you're not an expert and you'll run into many of the same problems. Or watch someone else try to use it.

What level of user are we targetting? I think we are targetting someone with substantially more Eclipse experience than you think we are targetting. The goal of Callisto is fairly simple: to simultaneously release ten projects. We are not trying (in the Callisto time frame) to make a single integrated product out of the projects. Such an integration is a great goal and perhaps the goal that we will adopt in the next integrated release, but (so far) it is not a goal for this effort.

This "what is our target user" is a good point to discuss - perhaps I am mistaken about the Callisto teams' goals...
