The WebDAV component provides Eclipse-based tools with an integrated WebDAV (Web Distiributed Authoring and Versioning) client. WebDAV is an IETF standard set of extensions to HTTP 1.1 which adds methods specifically for managing documents in a web-based environment. A wide range of tools and environments already support WebDAV and more are on the way. The inclusion of WebDAV support in the platform allows all Eclipse tools access to this new technology. The Eclipse WebDAV client also supports various parts of the Delta-V extensions to WebDAV in the support of artifact versioning. Further, the WebDAV client can be used as a high performance HTTP client. Ideally the WebDAV component (or part thereof) would be somewhat stand-alone from the platform itself and would form a contribution to the WebDAV and Delta-V communities which do not have a fully functional, open-source, Java WebDAV client. |

If you are interested in participating in the development of the WebDAV component, check out the developer's mailing list: platform-webdav-dev@eclipse.org. Chat with people there about your problems and interests, and find out what you can do to help. In particular, if you like network protocols, know the HTTP 1.1 spec as a friend or enemy, have read the WebDAV and/or Delta-V specs, have a WebDAV server you want to validate or would like to help produce a high speed, generalized HTTP client in Java then you'll be interested in working on the WebDAV component. For more detailed information, check out the Development Resources. |
