[news.eclipse.tools] Unable to debug using Eclipse 2.1 on Windows/Solari

I have been fighting to set up Eclipse as an IDE for my java environment.
My problem is running the application in the debug mode.
I have been trying to get the application running in the debug mode
but somehow the debug tabs in the "Run" menu option are not enabled, no
matter what i try.

Options to step-in,step-over etc do show up, but when launching the
application in the debug mode they do not become active.
The console seems to be waiting for some thing...

I've been fighting myself to get around this for 2 days now.Will really
appreciate if someone could provide any inputs to this.

P.S. I'm running Eclipse 2.1 with JDK 1.4.1_02
