Eclipse is using an internal compiler.
The preferences for the compiler (including compliance and dealing with
'assert') can all be set via Window->Preferences->Java->Compiler.
You can set it to do all sorts of weird and wonderful things independent of
the libraries you are compiling against.
Along the lines of the "target" attribute for the Ant javac task
